Special Note on Expressing Breastmilk and Important Distinctions Between Breast Pumps
Breastmilk that is not being frequently and adequately removed from the breast directly impacts on future breastmilk production. A baby who is breastfeeding effectively and removing breastmilk is the absolute best way of encouraging a milk supply to fully “come in” and ensuring an ongoing milk supply. It is what we all recognise as the ideal situation.
There may sometimes be situations where you have a need to express or you may have been recommended to use a breast pump. This could include your baby not feeding well at the breast, your baby not gaining sufficient weight, your milk being slow to “come in”, your milk not yet fully transitioned to mature milk, your baby may be pre-term or unwell or there may be a number of other scenarios.
Breast pumps are unfortunately not all identical and there is a staggering array of options on the market. Smaller personal use breast pumps are readily available in many retail stores and are compact and super convenient to carry and use. However, depending on your particular circumstances, they may not be the most suitable type of pump to use. A hospital grade pump has generally been found to be the preferred option if your baby is not yet feeding effectively at the breast or if there any complex breastfeeding issues that have not as yet been successfully resolved and you are needing to establish and/or maintain your milk supply.
Hospital grade pumps are strongly recommended in these time-critical situations because their motors are heavy-duty and robust and are therefore much more capable of removing your milk than small personal use pumps. Hospital grade pumps are safe, comfortable, commonly yield greater volumes of milk and make expressing sessions less time consuming and labour intensive.
